Pet Dachshund’s excruciating death leads to Grandview man’s arrest

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A Grandview man faces more than 30 years in prison after being accused of torturing and killing a pet dachshund.

Jackson County, Missouri Circuit Court documents filed on Thursday, October 17, reveal that Cleven R. Nevels Jr., 52, of Grandview, has been charged with multiple counts of animal cruelty and intimidation after allegedly killing a dog. victim had killed.

Nevels has been charged with two counts of animal cruelty, intimidation, violation of a protective order, armed criminal action and tampering with evidence. A grand jury indicted Nevels on Thursday, while a criminal summons was issued on Friday.

Court records show that on September 21, 2024, Nevels tortured the victim’s dachshund mix while burning the dog alive and cutting it off, ultimately causing the pet’s death. The victim had an active protective order against Nevels filed at the time.

Investigators said that after the crime, Nevels tried to melt the knife he used to hinder the case against him.

If convicted of all charges, the indictment states that Nevels faces a maximum prison sentence of 32 years and a fine of up to $42,000.

From Sunday, Nevels will be behind bars without a stock exchange listing. An arraignment is expected to take place on Monday, October 28 at 2 p.m. No further information has been released.
