Michigan State QB Aidan Chiles’ growth on full display against Iowa

Michigan State QB Aidan Chiles’ growth on full display against Iowa

Michigan State coach Jonathan Smith takes pride in his ability to recruit players and perhaps more importantly, his and his coaching staff’s ability to develop players.

There are few players on the roster who fall into both categories like quarterback Aidan Chiles. After an up and down first half of the season, Chiles played well in his first game back from the bye week. Smith credited the young quarterback with growing over the course of the season.

“Football is a game of development and growth, especially at university level, and we are fully committed to that,” Smith said after the match. “That does not mean that we are sitting here without a sense of urgency or with a lot of patience. We keep pushing these guys to get some confidence, build some skills, and do similar things over and over again.

“And that’s why even during the bye week, there wasn’t any panic or overreactions like, ‘We’ve got to get away from the offense and put something new in it.’ No, we know the type of players we have. We’re going to keep pushing those guys, and they’re going to continue with the work ethic that they had. We’re going to find some success, and that showed tonight.”

Smith noticed Chiles and the offense he learned from their close loss to Boston College a few weeks ago. In that game, Michigan State had numerous opportunities to take control, but failed.

The Spartans’ loss to the Eagles was the start of a three-game losing streak. They learned the importance of taking advantage of their opportunities.

“I think about tonight’s game and the reactions that had to happen, especially in the second half,” Smith said. “Going all the way back to Boston College, we had some chances, we had some leads in Boston and we couldn’t finish. We couldn’t respond the way we wanted to finish it. I think this shows some growth. You are always learning too.

“I think early in the season, call it the first four or five games, you always learn about your team. That doesn’t stop there, but I think we have learned that we are very capable if we can play disciplined football. There is a genuine belief in what we are going to do, and that showed tonight.”

Michigan State has matched last season’s win total and has done so in half a season. Given the preseason expectations for the Spartans from those on the outside, Smith undoubtedly has Michigan State’s football program ahead of schedule. Another win next week, and the Spartans could get more positive attention nationally.
