Luka Modric breaks the incredible record set by Real Madrid legend Ferenc Puskas 58 years ago

Luke Modric has written himself into the Real Madrid history books by becoming the oldest player to play an official match for the club.

The midfielder took the field against Celta Vigo on Saturday evening at the age of 39 and 40 to break a long-standing club record.

The previous record holder was Los Blancos legend Ferenc Puskas, who set the bar incredibly high in his last appearance for the club in 1966.

It means that Modric has broken a record that has stood for no less than 58 years.

The Croatian star came off the bench during the second half of the LaLiga match against Celta Vigo, replacing Fede Valverde in the 63rd minute of the match.

It didn’t take long for him to impress either, sending a pass perfectly into the path of Vinicius Jr. posted, who went home for Real Madrid.

The Brazilian forward’s goal made it 2-1 for the Spanish giants after Kylian Mbappe’s first-half opener was canceled out by Williot Swedberg.

Modric started his career at Dinamo Zagreb before joining Tottenham for £16.5 million in 2008.

After four years in North London, Modric moved to Real Madrid in the summer of 2012 for a fee of £30 million.

Since then he has firmly established himself as a club legend.

Modric played 548 games for Real Madrid, scoring 39 times for the club and providing 90 assists.

In that time, the midfielder has helped the club to four LaLiga titles, along with two Copa del Rey crowns.

He also played his part in six Champions League successes, including this year’s victory over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

Modric not only helped Croatia finish second and third at the 2018 and 2022 World Cup respectively, but also won the Ballon d’Or in 2018.

Modric has less than a year left on his contract at the Santiago Bernabeu, but given his impact on the first team, there is a good chance he will extend his stay in Madrid.
