Bucks County man sentenced to state prison for vehicular homicide while DUI crashed on Route 309

A Bucks County man received 7 to 14 years in prison after pleading guilty to vehicular homicide while DUI, recklessly endangering another person and driving under suspension in a Feb. 10, 2023 crash that left a man dead whose car was on the road. shoulder of southbound Route 309.

Daniel Joseph Selby, 33, of the 1100 block of Swamp Road, Fountainville, was convicted in Montgomery County Court for his role in the crash that killed Brailyn German Reinoso, court records show.

According to The Mercury, the guilty plea means Selby admitted to driving his Dodge Ram pickup while under the influence of both fentanyl and cocaine metabolites when he struck a Honda sedan stopped on the highway’s shoulder, causing Reinoso was killed.

The incident marked Selby’s second DUI offense and he has previous convictions for driving under suspension, according to court papers.

Pennsylvania State Police were initially dispatched to the scene of a multi-vehicle crash along the southbound lanes of Route 309 in Lower Gwynedd Township at 11:07 p.m. Upon arrival, they encountered a Honda sedan that had sustained heavy damage to the front and rear of the vehicle, as well as a Dodge Ram pickup that had sustained heavy damage to the front.

The driver of the Honda became trapped in their vehicle as a result of the crash and they were later extricated from the vehicle and transported by ambulance to Abington Hospital. Police said the driver was unconscious at the scene and had suffered serious, life-threatening injuries. A follow-up investigation by Lower Gwynedd Township police found the driver was listed in critical condition and had been intubated, the complaint said.

The victim — an unidentified man — died in the days after the crash, and the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office listed his cause of death as blunt impact trauma on Feb. 14 following an autopsy, police said.

The criminal complaint states that a crash reconstruction specialist with the state police determined that the damage profiles of the pickup and sedan were consistent with a high-speed rear-end collision, with Selby’s truck identified as the striking vehicle.

Police on the scene said Selby showed multiple signs of impairment, including a lack of coordination, bloodshot eyes and slow, low and hoarse speech. Selby failed several field sobriety tests and exhibited both eyelid and body tremors, police said.

The complaint states that Selby had a runny nose and complained of being hot and sweating, even though he was standing outside in the cold wearing jeans, a jacket and a winter hat. After Selby was arrested for driving under the influence, police said they recovered two plastic vials from his vehicle that contained a white residue suspected to be cocaine, and noted that multiple hypodermic needles were observed scattered throughout Selby’s truck.

Selby refused to consent to a blood draw, stating that “it might not be good for him,” but police obtained a search warrant several hours later to take two vials of Selby’s blood for testing, according to charging documents.

The results of those tests showed Selby had cocaine and fentanyl in his system at the time of the crash, police said.

Selby was initially charged with aggravated assault with a vehicle while DUI, along with misdemeanor charges of reckless endangerment and DUI – a second offense. However, those charges were upgraded during Selby’s preliminary hearing on March 30 due to the victim’s death, court records show.

Court records show Selby has multiple prior convictions in Montgomery and Bucks counties, including multiple DUI and drug offenses.

Selby also made regional headlines in June 2017 after escaping from the Bucks County Correctional Facility while awaiting proceedings on drug charges. His escape led to the closure of several schools in Bucks County, as well as shelter in place for residents of Warrington Township and Chalfont Borough, according to reports.

He was taken into custody several days later and his father, Daniel Selby Sr., was charged with hindering apprehension, aiding the commission of the crime and obstructing the administration of justice for aiding his son during his escape .

Court records also show that Selby pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of driving without a license in March 2023 in the Bucks County Court of Common Pleas. He was subsequently sentenced to six to 12 months in prison and a $2,500 fine, then transferred to Montgomery County to serve his sentence pending proceedings on the new charges.
