Harvey Elliott appears to have moved a step closer to returning to Liverpool after posting pictures of himself working out in the gym. The midfielder is recovering from a broken foot and has missed the last month of matches.

Elliott, 21, suffered the setback while training for England Under-21s during the September international break. Due to the untimely injury, he only played once under new head coach Arne Slot.

That was as a late substitute in the first home game of the season against Brentford. Elliott was otherwise unused against Ipswich Town and Manchester United, despite being named on the bench for those two away games in August.

However, these matches took place before the club’s Champions League and League Cup campaigns started. But the England Under-21 international appears hopeful of a quick return.

He shared a video of himself working alone in the gym and on the training pitches on Monday, captioning the Instagram post: “See you soon!”

Wednesday also saw him post several photos from those sessions before continuing on Friday. “With him!” Elliott captioned some photos of him working at Kirkby, the latest of which shows him dribbling a football for the first time since his injury.

Asked about injuries, Reds boss Slot said on Friday morning: “Alisson will certainly not be with us in the coming weeks, that is clear. So that’s a blow for him and for us because I think he’s done really well this season and has done so well for this club for so many years.

“The good thing is, and I have said this many times, that Caoimhin (Kelleher) has done well for us in previous years and this season, so we have a good replacement. But you always want all your players to be available.

“Now we have quite a few problems with players coming back from the national teams, and we can only judge that perfectly today, because today is the first time that they all participate and the first time that they all train together again. After the session, let’s see where everyone is.

“Macca (Alexis Mac Allister) missed one game (for Argentina), he played the second. Kostas (Tsimikas) missed the first game against England so I can name them all, but we have a few problems and let’s see where we are today. (Wataru) Endo was also sick.”
