Since March 2017, more than 81,000 criminals have been convicted in UP

LUCKNOW The UP Police Prosecution Directorate has made significant progress in the fight against crime and has successfully prosecuted more than 80,000 criminals in the last seven and a half years, demonstrating the effectiveness of its legal advocacy in various state courts.

Since March 2017, more than 81,196 criminals have been convicted. Of them, 54 were given the death penalty, 3,125 were given life imprisonment, at least 9,076 were sentenced to more than 10 years in prison and 16,941 were sentenced to less than 10 years in prison, ADG Deepesh Juneja said.

The directorate had been sidelined under previous governments, but the Yogi Adityanath-led state government prioritized its role and strengthened its ability to tackle crime effectively.

In the past sixteen months, the police and the Public Prosecution Service have convicted almost 52,000 criminals as part of Operation Conviction. Specifically in cases involving women and children, 28,700 criminals were punished for serious crimes, including sexual assault and crimes under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (Pocso) Act. Of these, 16,565 criminals were punished for sexual offenses and related crimes, with nine of them receiving the death penalty, 1,720 receiving life imprisonment, 4,443 receiving a prison sentence of more than ten years and 10,393 receiving a prison sentence of less than ten years.

In less than two months, a total of 12,135 criminals have been convicted under the Pocso Act since August 24. It included 44 death sentences, 1,354 life sentences, 4,599 sentenced to more than 10 years in prison and 6,138 sentenced to less than 10 years in prison. imprisonment. In addition, 496 criminals from the state’s most feared category were convicted, of which one was sentenced to death, 51 sentenced to life imprisonment, 34 to more than 10 years’ imprisonment and 410 sentenced to less than 10 years’ imprisonment.

From March 25, 2022 to August 31, 2024, 29 criminals involved in 42 cases linked to identified mafia gangs were convicted. This included one death sentence, five life sentences, seven sentences of more than ten years’ imprisonment and 29 sentences of less than ten years’ imprisonment.
