The questions McLaren still has about Red Bull's controversial starting number

McLaren CEO Zak Brown says he “still has questions I need to better understand” surrounding Red Bull’s controversial ride height device.

Red Bull admitted on Thursday at the F1 United States Grand Prix that they are the team at the center of an FIA investigation into a so-called ‘bib’ device that rivals suspect could be used to adjust the height of the front of the car floor under parc ferme conditions.

The reigning world champions have agreed to make changes to their car after talks with the FIA, but F1 title rivals McLaren are not buying their defense that the device is “inaccessible once the car is fully assembled and ready for use”.

“The only team that has the ability to adjust the ride height from the cockpit, whether they do or not, I have no idea, but the ability to do it raises questions,” Brown said Friday in Austin.

“It is very clear in the regulations and it is a material violation that if you modify your race car, anything that you have not been given permission to do, or the driver’s comfort, is against the regulations.

“So they decided to put a seal on it and at the same time heard from the team that you cannot modify it once the car is completely race-ready. The car is not always fully ready for the race at Parc Ferme and on Sunday mornings, so I think this needs to be resolved.

“Why do you need to seal something that you can’t get to in parc ferme or post-parc ferme conditions? So I still have questions that I need to understand better.”

Brown is convinced that a competitive advantage can be gained if such a device is “used inappropriately”, although he admitted he has no idea whether Red Bull has done anything untoward.

“If it’s used inappropriately, it’s certainly a performance benefit,” he said. “If that’s not the case, there’s no performance benefit whatsoever. We want to understand that better.”

Brown stressed he has full confidence in F1’s governing body to tackle the saga and reach a “resolution that is transparent and satisfactory to all teams.”

“Our questions are more about what may have happened in the past and understanding whether it was used in an inappropriate way,” Brown added.

When asked how far he expects the FIA to go with their investigation, Brown replied: “As long as the device has had the ability to be adjusted from the cockpit, I think that is probably what needs to be reviewed.”

Brown dismissed suggestions that Red Bull’s drivers may have had the ability to adjust the ride height themselves from the cockpit, joking: “They would have to have very long arms for that.”
