A Manchester man has become the 73rd person to be jailed over the Southport riots

A man who threw missiles at police in Southport has become the 73rd person to be convicted in connection with the violence, which damaged residents’ property, looted businesses and injured 50 police officers. Lawrence Howarth was identified throwing objects at officers and a police vehicle during the riot.

The 33-year-old, of Carnoustie Close, Manchester, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today, October 18. He was sentenced to two years and two months in prison.


Det Chief Insp Tony Roberts said: “The actions of those involved in the disorder in Southport – including Howarth – left more than 50 officers injured, windows smashed, garden walls destroyed and local residents left in fear. Howarth will now have time in a prison cell to reflect on his decision to bring chaos and destruction to our streets.

“We have now seen 73 people sentenced to a total of 156 and a half years in prison for the role they played in the disorder in Merseyside, with 131 people arrested and 93 of them charged.


“We are continuing to identify more people who attended the disorder on Merseyside and we will not stop until we have brought everyone we can to court.”
