Teenager sentenced to six years for armed robbery | News

A teenager was sentenced to six years in prison on Thursday for robbing an online store cashier of $6,000 at gunpoint.

Zachariah Fox, 18, of Hospital Lane, was sentenced following a guilty plea before Judge Franklyn Williams KC.

The charges stem from the armed robbery of Cyke Sturrup on March 8, 2022, while she worked as a cashier at Flowers Web Café at Wulff Road and Village Road.

Two hooded robbers burst into the business. One of them restrained the security guard as Fox approached the locked cash register and shook the doorknob.

Frightened, Sturrup opened the door. At that point, Fox pointed a gun at her and ordered her to give him money from the safe and cash register. A total of $6,000 was stolen.

Police arrested Fox on the same date and he admitted his involvement in the crime when they questioned him in the presence of his mother.

The court heard that Fox, who was 15 at the time, gave $100 of the stolen money to his accomplice and a man identified only as Fredrick received the rest.

Before the judge handed down the sentence, the convict’s father, Dwight Fox, was questioned by defense attorney Sonia Timothy-Knowles.

He testified that his son was a good person, but that he had succumbed to peer pressure.

Mr Fox said he sent his son to live with his mother in Bain Town in a failed attempt to distance him from bad company in the Kemp Road community.

In handing down the sentence, Williams said he believed Fox was capable of rehabilitation and that he appeared remorseful and remorseful.

He ordered Fox to undergo carpentry training during his incarceration.

Williams advised Fox to “leave the company” after his release from prison and focus on becoming a contributing member of society.

“There is no reason for people your age – under 30 and in some cases 15 and 16 – to die, except for people who commit folly,” Williams said.

“If you are truly repentant, you will overcome this and do well.”

The two years and seven months that Fox spent in pre-trial detention will be deducted from his sentence.
