Newcastle’s Eddie Howe reveals he has not been interviewed for a job in England

Eddie Howe says he has not been interviewed for the job of England head coach, but the Newcastle manager has not ruled himself out of becoming national team manager.

The Football Association announced this on Wednesday Thomas Tuchel was Gareth Southgate’s permanent successorwith the 51-year-old German having signed an 18-month contract until the 2026 World Cup final.

Magpies boss Howe was perhaps the strongest English candidate in terms of CV, but when asked on Friday whether he had been interviewed for the job he said: “No, I wasn’t.”

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said “around ten” candidates had been interviewed, including some from England.

Howe said he was pleased to see an end to the “distraction” over who would succeed Southgate, but said he might be interested in the future.

“There was no one happier than me to see Thomas get the job, actually, and take it, because it’s just a distraction – not that it distracts me, but you can see that it’s disturbing sometimes when certain things about are said and written. .

“The more everyone can concentrate on Newcastle – which has always been my only concern – the better.”

When asked if he might be interested one day, Howe said: “Who knows? I’ve always said that you can never predict what will happen in management, you can never plan too far ahead. Certainly not.

“I’m a daily planner but I certainly recognize that Newcastle – I’ve always said that – has a future and we have to make sure we make the right decisions in the long term.

“But the work has so many twists and turns that you can’t look far ahead. I think that’s actually negative, if you do that, so in terms of my own career and what lies ahead in the next five, ten years, I don’t know, I have no idea.

“But I would never say that managing England isn’t something I might want to do one day if I get the chance, but my focus is on Newcastle, Newcastle, Newcastle.”
