Trump jokes about his subpoenas and Kamala Harris’ absence from the Al Smith dinner

Former President Donald Trump made fun of himself and rival Vice President Kamala Harris during a speech at the Al Smith charity dinner in New York City on Thursday evening.

The dinner is a historic evening when presidential candidates often make light-hearted jokes about each other while raising money for Catholic charities.

Trump, who attended the event with his wife Melania Trump, joked about his recent lawsuits in the Big Apple and claimed he was happy to be in New York without a subpoena, The Independent reported.

“These days it is truly a pleasure to be anywhere in New York without a subpoena for my appearance,” Trump said. “Every time I don’t get a summons, I’m very happy.”

Trump also teased Harris for not attending the event in person, while also commenting on a recent viral video of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer giving a woman a chip in the same way a Catholic priest gives someone communion.

“I have to say, I was shocked to hear that Kamala was skipping the Al Smith dinner,” Trump noted. “I was really hoping she would come because we can’t get enough of hearing her beautiful laugh. She laughs like crazy. We would recognize it anywhere in this room… Instead of being here tonight, she is in Michigan receiving communion from Gretchen Whitmer.”

Harris decided to skip the event to campaign in Wisconsin, becoming the first major party presidential candidate to skip the dinner since 1984, but did address the crowd in a pre-recorded video.
