Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:META) has confirmed layoffs across multiple teams, including Instagram, WhatsApp and Reality Labs.

What happened: Meta confirmed that several teams within the company were affected by layoffs on Wednesday, TechCrunch reported.

The company stated that these changes were part of a strategic reallocation of resources to align with their long-term goals.

Don’t miss:

Among those affected was Jane Manchun Wong, a software engineer who joined the Threads team in 2023.

Other former Meta employees also announced their resignations on social media, including those who previously worked in Facebook, recruitment, legal and design.

A spokesperson for Meta told the report that Threads, recruitment and legal operations were unaffected by the reorganization, but the company did not disclose the exact number of affected employees and their respective departments.

Meta did not immediately respond to Benzinga’s request for comment.

Why it matters: This isn’t the first time Meta has made significant layoffs. In 2022, the company laid off about 13% of its workforce, and last year it laid off another 10,000 employees and eliminated 5,000 open positions.

These layoffs are part of Meta’s ongoing ‘Year of Efficiency’, which was initially a temporary measure but has now become a permanent part of the company’s operations.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has focused on more efficient operating models, which has led to significant changes within the company.

“It was really tough, we said goodbye to a lot of talented people we cared about,” Zuckerberg said of Meta’s previous layoffs in February. “But in some ways, becoming leaner makes the company more effective.”

This latest round of layoffs comes as Meta faces lawsuits filed by US states over allegations that it is contributing to mental health problems among teens by making its platforms addictive.
