‘New reports confirm what the Tories have been saying all along about winter fuel payments’ | Politics | News

This policy will leave vulnerable pensioners out in the cold this winter. The Chancellor must now listen to reason and reverse this decision in the Budget.

The damning report from the Social Security Advisory Committee exposes a number of critical flaws in this ill-conceived policy.

From Labour’s inability to carry out an impact assessment to the lack of proper protection for people on child tax credits, housing benefit and those living in poverty. The report leaves no stone unturned.

It also confirms the Express’s revelation yesterday that many pensioners are at risk of having their pension loan applications not processed in time for winter.

Unlike the paymasters of the Labor Party unions, who were hastily handed billions of taxpayers’ money, pensioners will have to make the impossible choice between heating and food this winter.

This report has also made it clear that the calculations of the money this policy would save the Treasury appear to have been done on the back of a faggot.

Labor politicians’ sums have never been added up. Why did we think they would start now?

For all the ethical, moral and practical reasons not to push through this insensitive decision, the report blows the lid off the austerity argument put forward by Rachel Reeves to justify it.

It’s high time Reeves did the right thing and reversed this heartless decision.

Her budget in just a fortnight is the time to step back, do the right thing and end this heartless policy.
