Hit-and-run suspect arrested, faces multiple charges

WAVERLY, N.Y. (WBNG) – Waverly police announced Thursday the arrest of a man charged with endangering the welfare of a child and driving under the influence, among other charges.

Waverly Police arrested Jonathan Houghtalen, 38, of Waverly for the following:

  • Aggravated unlicensed operation, a misdemeanor
  • Endangering the welfare of a child is a crime
  • Two DWI charges, both felonies
  • Violation of leaving the scene of an accident involving property damage, a misdemeanor

On Tuesday, October 15, the Waverly Police Department said it received a report of a motor vehicle property damage collision on Center Street.

The release states that investigators discovered that a witness had obtained a license plate number. Officers then located the suspect vehicle at a home in the village of Waverly.

The agency said Houghtalen was driving under the influence and left the scene of the motor vehicle crash. They added that both vehicles sustained significant damage during the collision.

Houghtalen is accused of driving his 16-year-old daughter to school while intoxicated on the morning of October 15. The collision occurred after the child was dropped off at Waverly JR-SR High School, the news release said.

Houghtalen is scheduled to appear in Village of Waverly District Court in November to answer the charges.
