Portrait of Niall Ó Donnghaile will be removed

Portrait of Niall Ó Donnghaile will be removed

The DUP has said the party believes “that his portrait remaining in Belfast City Hall would be a great embarrassment to Belfast City Council and its reputation”.

Sinn Féin has also said it agrees the portrait should be removed, ahead of Thursday’s meeting of party leaders where they backed the proposal.

It is understood the Social Democratic and Labor Party (SDLP) has also proposed a further review of the memorabilia in the Town Hall, while the Ulster Unionist Party (UUP) has introduced training for councilors and senior council officers on the safety and protection of suggested children.

Ó Donnghaile was elected Mayor of Belfast in 2011, when he was just 25.

He moved from Belfast City Council to the Seanad in 2020 to become Sinn Féin leader.
