Arkansas City’s basketball coach resigns amid an investigation into inappropriate communications with a student

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – The Arkansas City Police Department said it has completed an investigation into “inappropriate communications” between a former high school basketball coach and a student.

The coach submitted his resignation to the school board on Monday. He also resigned from Winfield Public Schools, where he worked as a high school teacher.

Late last monthArkansas City Schools received a report of “inappropriate communication” between a staff member and a student. That staff member, who also worked as head boys basketball coach, was placed on paid administrative leave while the district launched an investigation.

In a statement, Arkansas City Schools said the district will not tolerate behavior that compromises the trust or safety of students.

We would like to provide an update on the report of inappropriate communications between an employee and a student at Arkansas City High School. Effective immediately, this individual has resigned from his coaching responsibilities with Arkansas City Public Schools. Internal investigations are ongoing and we remain fully committed to cooperating with all relevant authorities.

The safety and well-being of our students are our top priorities. Arkansas City Public Schools will not tolerate behavior that compromises the trust or safety of our students. We are committed to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for all students and will continue to take all necessary steps to make good on that promise.

We appreciate the continued support of our community during this time and will provide further updates as necessary.”

Arkansas City police said the case has been referred to the Cowley County Prosecutor’s Office.
