Laughter at how far dog owners will go to stop pet licking: ‘Prison’

Desperate dog owners have melted the hearts of internet viewers with their creative solution to prevent their dog from infecting his foot.

Erin Daniels (@bossedupandbold), 47, shared a video on TikTok that has racked up nearly 300,000 likes and more than 2 million views. It shows Stewart, their pit bull, making a neck cone, flying pad and mini foot cone to keep him from licking his toe wound.

“Stewart seriously broke his toe chasing a squirrel in our backyard, one of his favorite activities,” Daniels said. Newsweek. “He was limping quite a bit, and we at first thought he had torn his ACL, a common injury for his breed, but then we discovered his toe was ‘split down the middle like a hot dog bun,’ according to our vet.

“I never knew dogs could have a toe amputated, and of course that would happen to him too,” added Daniels, a Milwaukee recruiter.

Stewart had been continuously licking his toe despite their efforts, so Daniels’ husband, Greg, decided to try a different approach by placing a cone on Stewart’s foot. This little covering came from their other dog, who had used it as a puppy when she contracted a virus on her paws.

“We’re doing everything we can. Look at those ears,” Daniels said on camera, as a solemn Stewart steps into the room with all his preventive gear.

“We had the neck pillow cone on him first, but he could still reach his wound, so we went with the original cone of shame as well, and then the foot cone. That worked! give more freedom, so I used medical tape and a sock, and that worked wonders,” Daniels added.

Stewart was due to have his stitches removed last Friday, but the vet discovered he had not healed enough and had to anesthetize him to re-stitch the wound.

“This dog is riding the battle bus. And so are his mommy and daddy,” Daniels captioned the video. They are now optimistic that he will be free on October 21. “They look really good though, so we’re hopeful!” she added.

To keep dogs from licking their wounds, pet owners like Erin and Greg have plenty of options besides the traditional cone.

Food manufacturer James Wellbeloved says common solutions include using deterrent sprays, which have a bitter taste to discourage licking; or opt for comfortable alternatives such as collars or inflatable cones. These can sometimes be less stressful for dogs than the standard ‘cone of shame’.

Bandages and dressings, such as the combination of socks and medical tape that Erin used on Stewart, can also be effective for covering wounds, especially if they are properly secured and checked regularly to ensure they do not restrict circulation .

TikTok users were obsessed with the adorable scene, and many fellow pet parents could relate.

“I feel you! Where did you get the cone? Do you have the same problem with our German Shepherd? Need help!!!” one dog owner posted.

“The foot cone is the icing on the cake,” one viewer commented, while another added: “This house is a prison!”

“I feel you! My dog can still reach his foot even with the cone. I’m glad you didn’t give up,” wrote Ruben Garza.

“Why does this look like a Lady Gaga outfit?” added Bethany Lauren.
