House confirms Herindra’s appointment as chief of intelligence

Jakarta. The House of Representatives on Wednesday accepted the nomination of Muhammad Herindra as head of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), replacing Budi Gunawan, who has headed the agency for the past decade.

Speaker of the House of Representatives Puan Maharani said Herindra is the only candidate for BIN head proposed by President Joko Widodo.

“The assessment team has declared that Mr. Muhammad Herindra is qualified to head the BIN and he will be inaugurated by the new President, Mr. Prabowo Subianto,” Puan said.

A plenary session on Thursday will officially confirm the House’s approval of Herindra’s appointment, she added.

Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Sufmi Dasco Ahmad said earlier that Herindra will be installed as the new BIN head on Monday, just a day after Prabowo was sworn in as the country’s new president.

Herindra is currently the deputy to Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, who will assume the presidency this weekend.

“We will work with all stakeholders with the sole aim of preserving the unity of Indonesia,” Herindra said.
