House confirms Deputy Defense Secretary Herindra as new spy chief – Politics

The House of Representatives confirmed retired army general M. Herindra, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s sole nominee for head of the National Intelligence Service (BIN), during a hearing held behind closed doors on Wednesday, just days before Jokowi announced his would leave office.

Herindra currently serves as deputy to Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto, who will be inaugurated as the next president on October 20.

The decision to appoint Herindra was announced by House Speaker Puan Maharani of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

“The House of Representatives has just confirmed Herindra as the new BIN chief. This means that he is eligible to be inaugurated by the new President Prabowo at any time after the transfer of power,” Puan said.

Prabowo ran on a platform of continuity with newly elected Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Jokowi’s eldest son, as his running mate.
