Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is defending himself to The Athletic after receiving radio comments on Tuesday

This is a follow-up to a story about heated comments Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made during a radio interview Tuesday morning.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made headlines Tuesday morning when he became angry during one of his weekly radio interviews and became defensive when asked about the lack of offseason moves to improve the roster.

Jones seemed to take an exception to the line of questioning as he spoke on the team’s flagship radio station, 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. Jones conducts interviews with the station on Tuesday and Friday mornings. He also participates in a pregame interview with the network.

While attending NFL meetings Tuesday afternoon in Atlanta, Jones explained in an exclusive interview with The Athletics‘s Dianna Russini on why he reacted the way he did.

“I don’t know that I would go so far as to consider the connotation of the volume as shouting,” Jones said. “OK? But the facts are that if I am questioned by the tribunal, it is not necessary by the guys I pay. I can take it from fans, but also from other people. I am very proud of how fair and how much I try to work with the media, we are brothers and sisters. But I was a little frustrated there today.

“We came in to take into account decisions made during the offseason. OK? They might as well have gone back to the decisions made in 2010. My point is, and that’s from my perspective, there’s no doubt about it, I’m sure they would have loved to interrogate me, like the fans are thinking: where are you going? to do about that? I get it. I get all that. And will really go along with it.

Jones went on to explain how his frustration stemmed from the individuals asking the questions, and not necessarily the subject itself.

‘The wrong people were doing the interrogation. If those had been real fans or if there had been people who knew what they were talking about, football people, then I might have had a different answer.”

Jones also made it clear that he has no plans to make any significant changes to his coaching staff. The majority of coaches in Dallas are on one-year contracts or are in the final year of their contracts. Coach Mike McCarthy is in the final year of his five-year contract.

The Cowboys suffered a 47-9 loss to the Detroit Lions at AT&T Stadium on Sunday, the worst home loss in Jones’ 35 years as owner and general manager.

“Of course,” Jones said when asked if he wanted to stay with McCarthy and his coordinators. “I haven’t even had a distant thought about that. But the game is repetitive. We clearly know what we did wrong. You can see that. The same guys who got it wrong have done it right many times over the past few months. So I know they can go out there and do well.

“The point is: what do you do? What you do is you go out there and you do your techniques or you do your best, and you do all those things and you do it well, and you get into games that don’t get out of hand and you can win.

Jones said he still believes in the team, which is 3-3 entering the bye week.

“Of course we do,” he said. “We have a great staff. I am proud of our staff.”

Will they try to improve the roster by making moves before the trade deadline?

“I didn’t think so,” Jones said.
