Shawn Mendes reveals how therapy helped him become a ‘better version of himself’

Shawn Mendes recently talked about finding peace or feeling better about himself. In a candid conversation with musician John Mayer for Interview magazine, the 25-year-old singer shared his thoughts on aging, self-discovery and how his new music has helped him reconnect with himself.

During the conversation, Mendes spoke about his break from music and the transformative experience of making his latest album. “Working on this album has helped me get back to myself most of the time,” he told Mayer. “It’s already earned me more than all my albums, and I haven’t shown it to anyone yet.”

Mendes attributed this period of growth and self-reflection to the space he allowed himself while creating Shawn. Admitting that he felt better about himself than ever before, he said: “I think there’s humor in finding yourself. You don’t take yourself so seriously. I don’t feel like I wake up every day and the trouble step.” role of Shawn, I feel like I’m waking up just like him.”

“You’re not necessarily a moving target when it comes to figuring yourself out.” If you’ve discovered another part of yourself, can you keep it forever?’ Mayer asked.

“I’m always here to let parts die,” Mendes admitted. “But subconsciously I hold on to some parts.” When Mayer pressed him to elaborate on this, Mendes explained that “thanks to therapy” he likes the newest part of himself the most, that he is “not so extreme anymore.”

When Mayer asked Mendes about his thoughts on growing older, the young star admitted that he was beginning to understand how life experiences shape personal growth. “It’s funny,” he said, “when you first break up, it feels like you suddenly have all the answers in the world.”

Looking ahead, Mendes expressed gratitude for the lessons he learned in therapy, emphasizing the importance of not taking himself too seriously. “If someone were to ask me the main reason why I feel better overall these days, I would probably say therapy first, and taking myself less seriously second,” she added.

Acknowledging the natural progression of growing older, Mayer praised Mendes for turning his experiences into art, saying, “The idea that you made a record out of it is so exciting to me.”
