Elk Grove man sentenced to 228 years to life for shooting on I-80 near Davis

A Yolo Superior Court judge on Monday sentenced an Elk Grove man to more than 200 years in prison for a shooting two years ago on Interstate 80 near Davis in which two vehicles were struck by gunfire.

Andre Chevill Wilson, 56, was sentenced to 228 years to life in prison on August 16, 2022, for committing the shooting with a fully automatic pistol and an assault rifle, the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office announced in a news release.

Wilson had four previous convictions in Alameda County considered strikes under California’s “Three Strikes” law. Prosecutors said his previous convictions were manslaughter in 1992; assault with a deadly weapon causing serious bodily injury in 1999; gun possession with a gang enhancement in 1999 and assault with a deadly weapon – a firearm – in 2010.

In June 2023, Wilson’s mental competency came into question in court after the county prosecutor’s office questioned whether Wilson was mentally fit to assist in his own legal defense at trial.

The following month, the court received a report from psychologist Sirintip Rhee that determined Wilson was mentally competent. Supreme Court Justice Tom Dyer ordered Wilson’s case reinstated and brought to trial.

A jury found Wilson guilty on August 28 of two counts of attempted murder, two counts of shooting into an occupied vehicle, two counts of assault with an offensive weapon or machine gun, two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm, and possessing a machine gun, possession of an offensive weapon and four counts of being a felon in possession of ammunition.

The shooting on I-80 occurred shortly after 6 a.m., when Wilson fired a gun at another driver traveling west on the freeway near the Mace Boulevard exit, the California Highway Patrol said. Officers later determined that the gunfire struck two vehicles; the occupants of those vehicles were not injured.

After the shooting, Wilson’s vehicle re-entered I-80 and headed west from the ramp on Mace Boulevard, where his vehicle left the road and struck a fence, the CHP said. Officers, with assistance from other law enforcement agencies, located Wilson near the crash scene and took him into custody.

Prosecutors said Wilson was driving a vehicle when he fired two firearms, a Glock pistol modified to be fully automatic and an AR-15 assault rifle. Both firearms had high capacity magazines.

According to the prosecutor’s office, Wilson planned to shoot at two other drivers near the Mace Boulevard exit. Supervisory Deputy Public Prosecutor Frits van der Hoek prosecuted Wilson.

“Some offenders pose a serious and obvious danger to society,” District Attorney Jeff Reisig said in the news release. “Our office is committed to prosecuting those who have demonstrated an inability to live peacefully within our community.”
