Former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel is sentenced after pleading guilty to 27 felonies

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – A sentencing hearing for former Clark County Sheriff Jamey Noel will take place on Monday, October 14. Noel faces more than a decade in prison for crimes while serving as Clark County sheriff.

The court will hear 21 people with victim impact statements. Noel’s lawyer objected to hearing some witnesses. However, special prosecutor Ric Hertel said he brought in people the judge asked for.

WAVE Troubleshooter Mark Stevens is at the Clark County Courthouse with updates:

The sentencing hearing comes more than a year after Indiana State Police first opened an investigation into allegations of criminal activity while he was in office from 2015 to 2022. In August 2024, Noel pleaded guilty to 27 of 31 crimes of which he has been accused.

The charges covered a wide range of alleged crimes, such as tax evasion, ghost labor and corrupt business practices. The whole case revolved around his time as sheriff and head of New Chapel EMS. Some of the charges include tax evasion, ghost labor and corrupt business practices.

Under the plea agreement, Noel would be sentenced to 12 years in prison and three years of probation.

Special Judge Larry Medlock has said he wants to hear from other victims to help him determine whether the 12-year prison sentence is appropriate.

Hertel believes this is almost the maximum he could receive under the law. Monday’s hearing will be open to the public, with 100 seats in other courtrooms used as overflow.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
