In an interview with Die Welt, German national team sporting director Rudi Völler revealed that he hopes Julian Nagelsmann will stay on as head coach after the World Cup in 2026, when his current contract expires.

“We will try to convince Julian that it makes sense for him to stay on as coach for a few more years. We will see when the time is right. As DFB we are of course very happy to have Julian Nagelsmann.” Völler said.

Nagelsmann “can only decide” whether he wants to continue after the World Cup, Völler also said in the interview with Die Welt.

“He’s a young guy who might have ambitions to do something else.”

Nagelsmann responded to Völler’s comments at a press conference on Sunday evening and left everything open.

“You have a certain conviction when you take the job. We played well at the European Championships and achieved a lot in football. I don’t know yet whether we will continue to work together after 2026,” said Nagelsmann.

“I feel very comfortable in this job. I can imagine everything, but there is still a lot of time,” he added.

For now, the focus is on the Nations League, then the World Cup qualifiers, then the World Cup – “and then we’ll see,” Nagelsmann said.
