Anti-Semitic, anti-American political cartoon book ends up on the children’s table in the Brooklyn library

A Brooklyn mother was shocked to find a book of anti-Semitic and anti-American political cartoons in a Bed-Stuy library this week as part of a children’s exhibit on world cultures.

“A Child of Palestine,” by Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali, is full of disturbing Jewish stereotypes and offensive images — including Jesus Christ on the cross kicking an Israeli soldier.

The parent found it on a table at the Macon branch of the Brooklyn Public Library on Tuesday, along with titles such as “The Rough Guide to the 100 Best Places in the USA” and books on Tanzania, Ecuador and Samoa.

“A Child in Palestine,” which BPL categorizes on its website as a book for adults, contains images of Jewish soldiers with large noses, a dead woman who had been murdered and abused while covered in a keffiyeh scarf, and an American soldier who strangled an Arab. man.

The book follows a child named Handala, who is depicted in the cartoons and witnesses the various events depicted, and who has since become a symbol of Palestinian resistance. Al-Ali is also called the ‘Palestinian Malcolm X’.

“The fact that it’s on a kid’s table next to books about ‘world culture’ is incredible,” said the Brooklyn mom.

“I was so shocked that this was picked up by a child and read as facts about Israel and the US,” she added.

“The fact that it is in the library means it could also be in classrooms.”

The Brooklyn Public Library says the book describes “the Israeli occupation, the corruption of the region’s regimes and the plight of the Palestinian people.” JC Rice

The book has since been removed from the library and not returned to the exhibition.

The library did not immediately respond to an inquiry from The Post.
