  • Black bear hunting season opens Monday in New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ – Black bear hunting season in New Jersey opens Monday, October 14, with new regulations and safety measures in place. The hunt is divided into two segments, with segment A running from October 14 to 19 and segment B scheduled for December 9 to 14. The first three days of segment A are for archery only, while muzzleloaders are allowed starting October 17.

Under state rules, hunters are limited to one bear per segment and may not take bears less than 75 pounds live or 50 pounds clothed. The New Jersey Fish and Game Council recently updated the state’s black bear management policy, with the changes formally adopted on October 2.

The 2024 season also includes a possible extension for segment B if the harvest percentage does not reach 20% by the end of the regular segment. If the season is extended, the hunt will continue from December 18 to 21.

Hunters are reminded of restrictions, including a ban on hunting bears near bait areas and the requirement to check harvested bears at designated stations throughout the state. The season may end early if the cumulative harvest reaches 30% of tagged bears.

For more information on regulations and permit details, hunters can visit the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife website.
