Sheikh Fahad Yousef tours the Central Prison and highlights its human rights efforts

KUWAIT CITY, Oct 12: The First Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahad Yousef Saud Al-Sabah conducted an inspection tour of the Central Prison on Friday, accompanied by the Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs for Human rights. Rights Affairs, Ambassador Sheikha Jawaher Ibrahim Al-Duaij Al-Sabah, to assess the progress of the works and the results of the “Support Them” initiative with its rehabilitation and construction projects.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior said the initiative was launched with the participation of the Ministry of Interior, the National Human Rights Office and the Human Development Association for Social Development. During the tour, the Minister of Interior inspected the activities inside the Central Prison, including workshops, public prison halls (Hall 2) and the Al-Hassawi Center school (classrooms managed by the Ministry of Awqaf and the Ministry of Education). such as the women’s prison workshops, halls and family retreat facilities.

The statement added that the Minister praised the achievements of the “Support Them” initiative, with its rehabilitation and construction projects, and emphasized his full support for the initiative and all its activities and projects. He also reaffirmed his support for all national and community initiatives that contribute to promoting human rights and guaranteeing civil and political rights in accordance with international agreements and Kuwaiti laws.

The initiative, he explained, aims to support and rehabilitate the inmates of correctional institutions to improve their conditions and enable them to effectively reintegrate into society. It is also part of the Ministry of Interior’s ongoing plans for strategic partnerships with governmental and non-governmental agencies to develop correctional institutions and improve services to prisoners, ensuring their rehabilitation to the best standards.

Sheikh Fahad Yousef further stated that Kuwait’s penitentiaries have made significant progress in infrastructure, healthcare and social services, making Kuwait’s prisons a model for adhering to humanitarian standards and international treaties.

At the end of the tour, he expressed his pride in the security personnel in all their roles, appreciating their efforts to maintain the security of the country.

The tour included participation from several ministries such as Education, Awqaf, Kuwait University and the Union of Charitable Associations. Upon the minister’s arrival, he was received by Brigadier General Fahd Al-Obaid, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for Correctional Facilities and Execution of Sentences at the Ministry of Interior, together with leaders and officers from the sector.
