Martha Stewart Reveals She Cheated on Husband of 29 Years, But ‘He Never Knew It’

Martha Stewart Reveals She Cheated on Husband of 29 Years, But ‘He Never Knew It’

Martha Stewart has opened up about having an affair during her marriage to Andrew Stewart.

In the trailer of her new Netflix documentary: Marta, Directed by RJ Cutler, the 83-year-old discusses her journey to becoming the first female self-made billionaire. The trailer also featured the entrepreneur giving life advice on marriage.

“Young women, take my advice: If you’re married and your husband starts cheating on you, he’s a piece of shit,” she said. “Get out of that marriage.”

However, a producer stepped in to contradict her by pointing out that she cheated on her ex-husband. “Didn’t you have an affair early on?” he asked her from behind the camera.

“Yeah, but I don’t think Andy ever knew about that,” Stewart joked back.

Andrew and Martha were married for 29 years after their 1961 ceremony. They welcomed their only child, Alexis, in 1965 and filed for divorce in 1990.

“Divorce was a terrible thing for me because we were the first in my family to get divorced,” the author said during the documentary trailer. “And the fact that we haven’t spoken to each other since the divorce is even more painful. But I am very strong and I am very motivated to continue with life.

Stewart also reflected on rebuilding her brand after serving a five-month sentence in a minimum-security prison in Alderson, West Virginia, after being found guilty in 2004 of obstruction, conspiracy and lying to federal investigators.

“The cookie cutter house and the cookie cutter life, that wasn’t for me,” Stewart said. “I could have just been a miserable housewife, but I didn’t let that happen to myself.”

“I was a trophy for these idiots,” she added of her sentencing, which included two years of probation. “Those prosecutors should have been put in a Cuisinart and put on high alert.”

After Stewart was released from prison, she was sent back to Bedford, New York, where she was under house arrest for another five months. Between the two sentences, she published a statement on her website.

“The experience of the past five months in Alderson, West Virginia, has been life-changing and life-affirming,” she wrote. “One day I hope to have the opportunity to talk more about everything that happened, the special people I met here and everything I learned.”

“As you can imagine, at this point I am very happy to return to my more familiar life,” Stewart continued. “My heart is filled with joy at the prospect of warm embraces from my family, friends and colleagues. Certainly, there is no place like home.”

Most recently, Stewart revealed last month in an interview with The New Yorkerwhat effect her time in prison had on her friendships. She specifically said her longtime best friend, Ina Garten, wasn’t speaking to her.

“When I was sent to Alderson Prison, she stopped talking to me,” said the founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia. “I found that extremely distressing and extremely unkind.”

However, she added that she doesn’t hold a grudge against the Barefoot Contessa, as her publicist said there is “no feud” and that Stewart is not “bitter.”

Stewart’s documentary can be seen on Netflix from October 30.
