Sterling Heights convicted of girlfriend’s murder in 2021

A Sterling Heights man killed at their home in 2021 for the murder of his girlfriend has been convicted, officials said.

On Thursday, 50-year-old Jason Ross was given a life sentence without the possibility of parole by Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Matthew Sabaugh, Attorney General Peter Lucido said in a statement.

“As a community, we cannot tolerate such atrocities,” Lucido said. “This sentence ensures that justice is served for the victim, her family and everyone affected by this senseless violence. Our thoughts are with the loved ones who continue to grieve, and we hope this sentencing brings them some measure of peace.”

An attorney representing Kellar was not immediately available for comment Friday.

Ross was charged with the murder of his girlfriend, Kathleen Hales, 47, on July 24, 2021.

Authorities alleged Ross stabbed Hales multiple times and beat her down with a hammer at their Sterling Heights home in the 43000 block of Charlemagne, located near 19 Mile and Van Dyke.

Investigators said Ross hid her body and fled with her credit cards, prescription drugs and car. Police arrested Ross in Prescott in Ogemaw County, about 145 miles from Sterling Heights. They said he had one of the murder weapons and Hales’ belongings.

After a 10-day trial, a jury found Ross guilty of four charges: first-degree murder, life without parole, theft from a building, a four-year felony, and unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, a five-year felony. and stealing a financial transaction device without consent, also a four-year felony, officials said.
