The former divorce advisor of Dr. Dre accuses him of harassment in a million lawsuit

The former divorce counselor of Dr. Dre, Dr. Charles Sophy, has filed a $10 million lawsuit against the music executive and business mogul, claiming he was the victim of a “systematic and malicious campaign of harassment” by the defendant.

According to the Los Angeles TimesThe lawsuit was filed Monday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Dr. Dre, born Andre Romell Young, is being sued by Sophy for civil harassment and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

Sophy claims in the lawsuit that he currently “wears a bulletproof vest whenever he steps foot outside, is afraid to leave his house and is constantly looking over his shoulder.”

The lawsuit stated that Young and his ex-wife, Nicole Young, received marital counseling from Sophy in 2018, adding that the former couple also agreed to him mediating the terms of their divorce. Following the finalization of their divorce, Sophy ceased communication with the couple in 2021 after working “diligently, independently and honestly” to “help Young and his ex-wife resolve their differences.”

“Fourteen months later, and suddenly, without warning, Young launched a sustained campaign of insulting messages, nightly reminders that he would not ‘forget’ Dr. Sophy, and homophobic comments,” the lawsuit said. Sophy also said in the lawsuit that the outcome of the mediation left Young frustrated, and the defendant lashed out at him for those feelings.

The filing also included text messages Sophy received from Young. These messages are said to have been sent between February and August 2023. Sophy claims that many of these messages contain ‘homophobic rhetoric’ (e.g. ‘You’re ab…’), the Los Angeles Times reported. The messages state that Young allegedly told Sophy that he “needs to pay up” and that the accuser “has the wrong one.”

The Beverly Hills psychiatrist claims he ultimately answered Young in an attempt to calm things down. He said he told Young that while he couldn’t really determine what was going on, he was open to meeting with the defendant to talk about the matter. However, the filing stated that Young “doubled down and further threatened (Sophy).”

The filing said Sophy became concerned when Young continued to send him messages. The prosecutor also said that because he was aware of Young’s “well-documented history of violence and abuse” and of his popularity, it was possible that he could make any threat, “of bodily harm, violence or death to Dr. Sophy as a result. ”

The lawsuit alleges that Young arranged for several employees to act as FBI agents in an attempt to illegally enter his home, which was in a gated community. Los Angeles Times reported. According to the lawsuit, that was after the threats were not carried out. The prosecutor said he eventually had to increase his security and wear a bulletproof vest.

In addition to a jury trial, Sophy also wants to be awarded $10 million in actual and compensatory damages. He is also seeking exemplary and punitive damages, to be decided at trial.
