Rapist Trump cheated on Brett Kavanaugh on his way to the Supreme Court

Key Takeaway: The FBI’s sham investigation was little more than a setup for Republicans to vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court while pretending not to condone sexual violence.

At the time Kavanaugh was confirmed, you probably remember that there were multiple sexual assault allegations against him.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse recently released his damning report on what should have been a thorough investigation into these allegations. His summary: “The Trump White House restricted FBI investigators and lied to the American people about the investigation and the tip line. The six-year Senate investigation was stymied by repeated executive obstruction.”

Whitehouse spoke to Lawrence O’Donnell on Tuesday evening about the report’s key conclusions. First, Trump lied to the US when he said the FBI had a free hand to investigate the allegations. In reality, the FBI “was told exactly what to do every step of the way by White House lawyers,” Whitehouse said.

“The second thing we were confident about is that it was a by-the-book FBI investigation,” Whitehouse added. But there was no book. “They held up an imaginary book that everyone could have confidence in, but ‘it was the White House that provided direction all along.’

One of the directions was not to look for corroborating evidence, Whitehouse continued. So the whole thing was a setup for Republicans to vote to confirm Kavanaugh while pretending not to condone sexual violence.

The final major finding was that the tip line was fake, Sheldon said. “No tip was ever investigated by the FBI,” Whitehouse said. “The tip line was actually set up in a way that could have worked, but what came in was then diverted away from any productive investigation.”

Asked why it took six years for the report to be completed, Whitehouse said: “The government has built a wall.” He said the only information they could get on the Internet was how the tip line works. The FBI “provided a lot of sensitive information about the Crossfire Hurricane investigation and the Trump/Russia investigation to Senate Republicans,” Whitehouse noted, but the FBI stonewalled Whitehouse’s investigation even under the Biden administration.

No one should be surprised that a man like Trump, who was believed to have sexually assaulted E. Jean Carroll and bragged about grabbing women by the penis, would cover up allegations of sexual assault by his Supreme Court nominee.
