New shock favorite for next England manager revealed after Lee Carsley 'rules himself out'

On Thursday evening, Lee Carsley suffered his first defeat as interim England boss.

Following the Three Lions’ defeat to Greece, a new favorite has emerged to become England’s next manager.

On Thursday evening, interim boss Lee Carsley suffered his first defeat in charge after England were defeated by Greece at Wembley in the UEFA Nations League.

Vangelis Pavlidis scored twice to secure a 2-1 win for the visitors, while Jude Bellingham scored for England.

Despite being one of the frontrunners to get the job on a permanent basis, Carsley said after the match: “I was quite surprised when the last one came when it was ‘the job and it’s mine to lose’.

“My brief has been clear from the start. I’m doing three matches, there are three games left and then hopefully I’ll go back to the Under 21s. I said at the start that I wouldn’t rule myself in or out and that’s still always the case. I feel more than comfortable in my position.”

Thanks to Carsley’s latest comments, a new favorite has emerged to become England’s next permanent manager.

According to bet365, former Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Paris Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel has become the 11/10 favorite to take over the Three Lions.

Tuchel is followed by Carsley (2/1), Pep Guardiola (5/1), Graham Potter (7/1), Eddie Howe (9/1) and Frank Lampard (20/1). At the time of writing, the odds were correct.

Players such as Kieran McKenna, Michael Carrick, Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti have also been tipped to get the job.

Commenting on the defeat to Greece, Carsley said: “I didn’t think we started the game great. I thought we were second best. We tried something different with the formation. We never gave ourselves the chance to see if it was the right decision or the wrong decision.

“I think sometimes with the players we have we have to be brave with our systems and be creative. I could easily have gone with a nine – we had two on the bench. I’m happy to take the blame. It was completely my idea. It didn’t happen tonight. It was a matter of being a little creative.”

He continued: “We tried something different, we tried to overload the midfield, play a little differently. It’s something we tried for 20 minutes yesterday, it’s something we experimented with and it was disappointing that it didn’t work out. But I think it was probably unrealistic to expect too much and I think it’s a matter of trying again.”
