What is the UK visa policy for children? How can Indian students benefit? Check eligibility, timeline

A new opportunity has opened up for international students aged 4 to 17 who want to continue their education in the UK. The Child Student visa allows young students to study at independent schools across the country, provided they meet specific eligibility requirements.

How to apply?

To apply for a Child Student visa, applicants must receive an unconditional offer of a place on a course at an independent school.

They must also demonstrate that they have sufficient financial support to support themselves during their stay in Britain and to cover course costs.

Importantly, applicants need permission from their parent or guardian, which must be proven during the application process.

Students aged 18 and over must apply for a standard student visa, as the child student visa has replaced the previous Tier 4 (child) student visa.

Timeline of application

The application timeline varies depending on the applicant’s location. For those applying from outside the UK, the earliest date they can submit their application is six months before the course start date, with a decision usually made within three weeks. Conversely, applicants already in Britain can apply three months before the start of their course, ensuring that their application is submitted before their current visa expires, with a decision usually made within eight weeks.

Duration of the visa

The length of stay on a Child Student visa depends on the age of the applicant at the time of application and the duration of the course. For those under 16 years of age, the visa allows for the duration of the course (maximum six years) plus a further four months, while applicants who are 16 or 17 years old may stay for the duration of their course (maximum three years), plus four months. months.

According to the travel rules, students can arrive in Great Britain up to one month before the start of the course. Those interested in extending their stay can do so if they qualify. The visa application fee is £490 for those applying from outside the UK and the same amount for extensions or conversions from within the country, along with a healthcare surcharge.

The Child Student visa allows students to attend independent schools, work part-time during the school year (up to 10 hours per week) and take on full-time employment during holiday periods.

However, this visa has limitations: students cannot study at recognized schools or higher education institutions, access public resources, obtain permanent employment, or bring family members unless the parent applies for a separate parent-of-a-student visa.
