The layoffs, which affect more than 500 employees in Malaysia alone, are part of a broader restructuring to improve TikTok’s global content moderation operations, a company spokesperson said. The majority of affected staff were involved in content review processes.
Reuters sources initially suggested, on condition of anonymity, that more than 700 jobs were being cut in Malaysia. Employees were informed of their dismissal by email on Wednesday evening.
TikTok confirmed the job losses told Reuters, saying that “several hundred employees” worldwide would be affected. The company emphasized its commitment to invest $2 billion globally trust and security measures this year.
“We are making these changes as part of our ongoing efforts to further strengthen our global content moderation business model,” a TikTok spokesperson told Reuters. The platform aims to improve efficiency, with 80% of content that violates guidelines now removed by automated technologies.
Earlier this year, Malaysia reported a sharp rise in harmful social media content and urged companies including TikTok to improve monitoring on their platforms.
Sources told Reuters that further cuts may take place next month as the company consolidates some regional operations.
