HOUSTON – Firefighters have contained a large fire that started at a wood pallet company in eastern Houston.

The fire was first called around 12:40 Thursday afternoon in the 12000 block of Church Rd.

According to Brent Taylor, Public Information Officer with the Houston Fire Department, the fire started in a group of wooden pallets and spread to some nearby propane tanks.

After the fire spread, several vehicles on the site also caught fire.

Firefighters remain on the scene, but Taylor said the fire is under control.

“There are some areas on the property that are difficult to reach, so they are waiting for equipment to come out to help clear the site and get to the last remaining areas to fully extinguish the fire,” Taylor said.

Although it is not known exactly how many pallets were burned, approximately 3 to 4 hectares of land was affected by the fire.

A Hazmat team responded and Harris County Public Health is monitoring air quality. So far, officials have not been notified of a larger impact beyond the immediate area.

Viewers contacted KPRC 2 about the fire, saying it was spreading and they heard explosions.
