The time served for crime attacks

A Kelowna man who committed a crime over months in 2022 was sentenced Thursday to two years in prison.

Saeed Abbas, 44, was sentenced to 24 months in prison, 24 months of probation and a long list of conditions for crimes including burglaries, stealing wallets and at least four car thefts, as well as possession of a weapon.

He has been in custody since 2023 and with credit for time served, his sentence was effectively served as of Thursday.

The offenses took place between September 2022 and January 2023, the latter date being the date he began his imprisonment.

“All of Mr Abbas’ criminal conduct is directly linked to his substance abuse and abuse, there is a very strong correlation between this and his unenviable criminal record,” Judge Briana Hardwick said on Thursday.

“The criminal record that is being entered jointly concerns offenses in more than one province and certain juvenile offences.”

In total there were 25 convictions for largely property offences, and 22 convictions for non-compliance.

Abbas, the judge said, has been functioning well during his captivity and has taken several courses during his captivity. He also took on work in the laundry department. All of these factors, she said, bode well for his future choices.
